The flyover will be opened to the public within two days after it is sanctioned, Memon said. According to local reports, the incident took place on Tuesday. He also credited the project team and noted that the flyover has practically eliminated the congestion issues for commuters using University Road.
How the New Flyover Fits Into Red Line BRT
Red Line covers a distance of about 26 to 27 kilometres from Malir Halt to Numaish through University Road. In 2017, it was announced by the government. Early 2022, with a first goal of 2023. This was pushed back to 2024, then to the end of the year 2026.
It has been more expensive as well. The estimate was revised up to Rs 79 billion to Rs 103 billion. The project documents call for usage of approximately 320,000 passengers per day on the line.
The reasons for the Project’s delay
First, the contracts were for two years, Memon said. That then drove up material expenses due to inflation rates. He cited the higher dollar rate, cement prices, and petrol prices. The government continued working and resolved related issues through online negotiations with the institutions concerned.
The project was beset by other contract issues as well. The contract was cancelled by the Sindh government in April, then re-awarded under emergency. The Frontier Works Organisation then took over the construction of a section of University Road.
What Is Still Unfinished
This corridor is not yet finished. The main open section reportedly is 2.7 kilometres upstream where K-IV water augmentation pipelines are installed. The rest of the roadwork will be completed in the next month or so, Memon says. Works are also underway on construction at the stations on the Red Line.
Hanging out a median shade cloth will be done on University Road already as a mixed traffic lane.
