BYD Sold More EVs in One Month Than the US Did in Three
One month of BYD sales has now surpassed a full quarter of every American EV sold. It’s a shocking headline and the figures that follow are true. They also require context.
Who bought BYD in October 2026?
October battery electric vehicles sold 305,743, marking BYD’s first time reaching over 300,000 units to increase 37% year-on-year. It is the highest month of 2026 and its 490,168 total sales of new energy vehicles (including plug-in hybrids) are 11 percent higher. Approximately 63% were battery electric.
How does that compare with the USA?
Kelley Blue Book estimates sales for the whole US market to have been just over 262,500 EVs for the 3Q. That was exceeded by some 43,000 units BYD had sold in October. The quarter, dubbed the best for the US EV market in a year, accounted for approximately 6.4% of the nation’s new vehicle sales.
Is it a fair comparison?
The BYD figure is for a global company supplying markets throughout China and many other markets, and the US number is for one country. For comparison, this is a BYD scale. It fails to reveal that Americans have been buying comparatively few EVs based on their size.
Is BYD Everywhere?
BYD sold nearly 1.95 million fully electric (FE) vehicles in the first 10 months of 2026, which is close to 6% higher than a year earlier. Total sales of all vehicles were approximately 3.62 million, which decreased by 2.2%. The October total number of Plug In Hybrid sales dropped by 17% as the total number of sales moved to 177,382. Not in all categories of cars, but in pure electric cars.
Conclusion
BYD’s best-ever October proves just how much electric vehicles have come to the global market. 170,194 BYD cars were exported in October. In the first ten months of this year, it shipped to overseas markets more than 1.5 million, about two times that of the same period last year. The company projects exports of some 2 million units by year end.
