Karachi to Begin Work on Around 140 Roads: What to Expect
The infrastructure issue in Karachi is now being taken care of. There will be construction and rehabilitation underway on approximately 140 roads within days, says Mayoral Murtaza Wahab.
What news did the Mayor announce?
The process of about 140 other additional roads has been completed, said the Mayor, Wahab. Work orders will be issued in two to three days and construction should start by the end of the week.
How Much Will It Cost?
According to the mayor, it’s about Rs 13 billion. The actual figure will be utilized for these connecting roads, some of which are outside the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) administration.
Which Roads Are Included?
I found no reports that give the complete list of the 140 roads. Other works are underway. SM Taufiq Road is being rehabilitated from Teen Hatti to Sohrab Goth. A road linking Gulbai and Shershah is under about Rs 2 billion and part of it will be completed in the next month. The construction of the 5 km long Tori Bangash Road (Keamari to District West) is also underway.
How Long Will the Work Take?
The mayor hasn’t provided one schedule for all roads on 140. In a Friday, Oct. 21 update, he said some roads would be completed within three to four months, with several roads planned to begin in the first week of November.
Why Do the Road Numbers Differ Between Reports?
KMC had announced a Rs 14 billion project in July for 139 roads involving reconstruction, drainage, water supply mains and street lights. The recent piece of news mentions approximately 140 roads and Rs 13 billion. In another October report, there were 149 new roads in a broader Rs 68 billion infrastructure push.
What Drivers Should Expect?
It can result in reduced traffic and fewer struggles with the commute. Typically, rehabilitation involves closed lanes and rough surfaces for several months. Give additional time for daily commute and if possible avoid peak hours at active sites.
How Can You Prepare?
- Check Karachi Traffic Police and KMC updates before long trips.
- Make a second route to work.
- Drive slowly on rough and new surfaces.
- Keep tyre pressure correct and watch for new noises from the suspension.
Conclusion
The project may end up providing better roads, but it will certainly disrupt drivers. Listen to official announcements, provide plenty of time and maintain your vehicle in good condition.
