More than 10,000 Vehicles received Challans for emitting smoke in Lahore

The Lahore Vehicle Smoke Crackdown has intensified as traffic police issued more than 10,000 challans to smoke-emitting vehicles in September alone. Drivers releasing black smoke on Lahore’s roads are now facing stricter checks and penalties.

Lahore Vehicle Smoke Crackdown Numbers

Lahore Traffic Police data revealed a 215% increase in enforcement during the month compared to August, and an alarming 1149% increase in January figures. That’s not a gradual increase. A calculated and aggressive escalation.

They are also continually checking at the city’s entrance and exit points, on commercial vehicles and trucks/buses, which tend to put out the most visible smoke.

Lahore Vehicle Emissions Crackdown Timeline

The numbers are part of a campaign that has been underway since mid-year. In July, CTO Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi had already announced that instead of issuing fines, the license will be suspended for vehicles that are found to be emitting smoke while operating.

By that time, 1013 cases had already been registered, and 45 EO Teams were operating in parallel, along with 12 checkpoints at the city’s entrance and exit points. Police also had one month to fix any vehicle in government and semi-government vehicles that was emitting smoke or undergo legal action.

Technology Is Doing a Lot of the Work

A big part of why enforcement scaled this fast is automation. Now traffic police will start issuing e-challans without manually flagging any of the vehicles, using an AI-based system to detect vehicles that emit smoke.

The feather that adds an extra layer is the camera network of Punjab Safe Cities. Safe City cameras during only 3 days in September flagged more than 500 vehicles that emitted smoke and issued more than 756 separate e-challans.

What these Fines actually look like

According to traffic penalties in Lahore, if a person emits more than the required level of smoke, he will get a fine of Rs. 2,000 for a first offense, up to Rs. 15,000 for repeat violations. The penalty for driving without a valid fitness certificate is escalating as well.

Why the Vehicle Smoke Crackdown Matters

The Lahore Vehicle Smoke Crackdown comes at a critical time, as vehicle emissions remain a major contributor to the city’s smog during colder months. This enforcement wave is planned and timed, rather than reactive, and happens after the smog season has reached critical levels.

What Car Owners Need To Do

If you have not conducted a genuine emissions test on your vehicle, you should do so now, rather than when you receive a challan. So the chances of a vehicle going undetected on a smoky day in Lahore, especially with AI cameras watching, are truly minimal.

Conclusion

The anti-smog crackdown in Lahore has shifted from occasional checks to a coordinated, technology-driven facility that operates on a 24/7 basis. Earlier, maintaining a vehicle with a clean exhaust was a matter of choice, but now it is a necessity to avoid being on the list of challans.
